The Principles of Chinese Furniture

Chinese antique furniture has stood the test of time, and for hundreds of years many of the designs used to create such objects of beauty have remained the same. Remarkably, drawings were rarely produced, but skilled and talented craftsmen verbally handed down their designs, from generation to generation.

Throughout the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and hundreds of years earlier, Chinese craftsmen dedicated themselves to the quality and precision of their joinery techniques, building furniture using a frame and panel system, cleverly utilizing mortise and tenon joints, put together almost like a puzzle. With glue and nails rarely been used, and the concealment of the joints, this approach to joinery construction resulted in clean and simple furniture styles.

Alongside the superior principles of design, the craftsmen's methodical selection of woods, known for their hardness, density, striking color and grain has helped to create some of the worlds most finest and treasured antique furniture.

Understanding these Historical Objects of Beauty:

All of our products have been carefully selected for their beauty, functionality and high levels of quality. Any restoration work has been undertaken by professional craftsmen who have been sympathetic in their approach, thus ensuring that each piece retains its original authenticity. It is also very important to note that over time wood ages and that all joints, doors, drawers, etc may not be in their original perfect condition. Variances in wooden pieces can include dents, scratches and worn edges all of which can be considered part of the unique characteristics and natural beauty of each object.

Implications of Temperature Changes:

When exposed to changes in temperatures (resulting from the movement of goods between countries with different levels of humidity and general climate) solid wood can experience some adjustments, such as shrinkage and/or expansion. It should be noted that this will not impact the structure of the piece. A settling in period will make allowances for any changes and over time will further enhance the natural beauty of the antique.

Tips for Chinese Furniture Care:

Whilst Chinese antique furniture has stood the test of time, we would like to offer some tips for the ongoing maintenance of these beautiful objects:

  1. Try to avoid using furniture oils or polish on your antique products. Cheap sprays could affect the color of the lacquer

  2. We recommend that you use a dry duster to wipe down the pieces. To remove any stains, try using a slightly damp cloth

  3. One of our greatest tips, this is something that we have used on many of our European antiques over the years: if your item becomes scuffed in anyway, try touching up the blemish with shoe wax (in the appropriate color), it works a treat!

  4. Every 6-12 months, you may wish to consider using a natural wax to revitalize the charm of your furniture.
